Getting our organic certification has been one of those quiet but meaningful milestones for us at Cacao Co, and I wanted to share a little of that journey here.
As cacao continues to be recognised as a powerful superfood (and honestly, a beautiful blessing in our daily lives), it is probably no surprise that we are often asked whether our ground cacao is organic. The simple answer has always been yes - our cacao has long been organically grown and carefully sourced. But officially listing a product as organic is a whole other process.
Our Certification Journey
Gaining certification involves far more than good intentions. There are forms, audits, traceability checks, and systems that need to be in place to ensure not just the cacao itself, but our processes as a brand, meet organic standards. It was a journey that asked us to be patient, organised, and intentional about how we operate day to day.
What surprised me most was how grounding the process felt, even with a hint of last-minute scramble. I remember Ed and I preparing for the audit - double-checking paperwork, tidying shelves, and doing a few nervous laps around our little Cacao Co office in Brighton - despite knowing we’d gone above and beyond. It gave us a moment to pause and reflect on the care behind the small, often unseen choices that shape the cacao we share.
The certification process really invited us to reflect on how we work with the cacao itself. Our approach has always been intentionally minimal. Our cacao is ground in small batches and handled with care, so the cacao remains close to its natural state. This gentler process honours cacao’s long history as a ceremonial and culturally important plant, while ensuring it remains simple to prepare and enjoy in everyday life.
What Organic Certification Means for Us
Now that we have officially received our organic certification, Cacao Co can be listed and marketed as fully organic. It feels good to have the paperwork reflect the care behind the scenes.
More than anything, this milestone reflects what we stand for as a brand. Ed started Cacao Co with a simple intention to help more people experience the wellbeing benefits of cacao in their everyday lives. Achieving organic certification guarantees the quality and purity of our cacao, meaning that people can experience the best possible benefits available. It also supports our mission to create a community for cacao lovers, promoting kinship and grounding to the earth. Organic farming respects the earth and our connection to it, and that care is something we hope comes through in every bag of cacao we share.
In many ways, organic certification doesn’t change how we do things; it simply validates a way of working we were already committed to through simplicity and respect for cacao.
And hey - if you’re buying our cacao in the coming weeks, keep an eye out for our new product packaging!
